Hollywood has embraced South Korean cinema, but the Academy Awards have yet to recognize a Korean performer in the Best Actress category. Jeon Do-yeon, one of South Korea’s most accomplished actresses, could change that with her performance in Netflix’s “Possible Love.”
The possibility comes six years after “Parasite” made history as the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture. While that victory established Korean cinema as a major force in international filmmaking, recognition for its leading actresses has remained elusive. A nomination for Jeon would mark another breakthrough as Hollywood continues to recognize performances beyond English-language productions.
American audiences will soon have an opportunity to see the performance attracting Oscar attention. “Possible Love,” directed by South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong, is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on November 6. The film has already won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival, placing it among the international productions drawing attention ahead of the next Academy Awards.
Jeon’s emergence as an Oscar contender is particularly notable given her relatively low profile in Hollywood. The actress has spent more than 30 years building a distinguished career in South Korea, earning critical acclaim for performances that have established her reputation as one of the country’s leading screen talents.
Her international recognition, however, is not entirely new. In 2007, Jeon won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in “Secret Sunshine,” becoming the first South Korean actress to receive the honor. Nearly two decades later, her latest collaboration with Lee has brought her back into the international awards spotlight.
Despite her achievements, Jeon has remained less familiar to mainstream American audiences than her reputation in South Korea might suggest. Her potential Oscar nomination would therefore represent recognition of a career that has largely developed outside Hollywood rather than the arrival of a newcomer.
Jeon herself has expressed little attachment to the prospect of making Academy Awards history. She has said that receiving an Oscar nomination was never a personal goal or something she had particularly desired, maintaining a measured response to the growing attention surrounding her performance.
The film’s success at Venice has strengthened its standing in the international awards race, although critical acclaim does not guarantee an Oscar nomination. Whether Jeon can secure a place among the Best Actress nominees remains uncertain.
With its Netflix debut approaching, “Possible Love” will bring Jeon’s performance to a wider global audience. The question now is whether an actress who has already earned some of international cinema’s highest honors can achieve a distinction that has so far eluded every Korean performer at the Academy Awards.
