Winter tiremakers are competing on more than snow traction as automakers and consumers increasingly weigh wet-road safety, durability, noise and efficiency. Hankook Tire & Technology’s latest win in a German automotive magazine’s test gives the South Korean manufacturer a stronger foothold in Europe’s premium segment and offers a competitive signal for global tire investors, including those tracking established brands such as Michelin and Pirelli.

Hankook’s Winter i*cept evo 4 ranked first in Auto Bild Allrad’s 2026 winter tire test for SUVs and crossovers, the company said on October 15, 2026. The tire earned an overall score of 1.3, securing the publication’s highest rating, “Very Good,” and beating nine competing products from global manufacturers.

Pirelli’s Cinturato Winter 3 and Michelin’s Pilot Alpin 5 tied for second, each scoring 1.4. Only three of the 10 products tested received the top rating, highlighting the narrow performance gap among leading winter tire brands.

The test evaluated 10 winter tires measuring approximately 8.9 inches wide and designed for 18-inch wheels. Each was fitted to a BMW X1 compact sport-utility vehicle and assessed across wet, dry and snowy driving conditions.

Hankook’s strongest performance came on wet roads. The Winter i*cept evo 4 recorded the best results in both straight-line and cornering aquaplaning tests, earning a score of 1.2 in the category. Aquaplaning occurs when water builds between a tire and the road, reducing traction and steering control.

The tire also achieved the highest average speed in the dry-handling test while maintaining strong safety performance. Its results on snow were also rated favorably, giving it a balanced showing across the conditions evaluated.

Hankook says the latest model also improves on its predecessor in efficiency and durability. The company highlighted reduced rolling resistance and exterior driving noise, along with a 15% increase in tread life. Its tread design is intended to improve braking on snow while preserving traction and driving force in adverse weather.

The results could help Hankook strengthen its position in Europe, where winter tires must handle a combination of snow, ice and wet pavement. Independent assessments by established automotive publications provide consumers with a way to compare products on performance, potentially influencing purchasing decisions beyond brand recognition.

For the broader tire industry, the test underscores how manufacturers are differentiating premium products through a combination of safety, longevity and efficiency. Hankook’s result against established European competitors adds to its case for competing in a market where technical performance can support brand positioning and pricing power.
