More than 150,000 people joined a fitness challenge that has turned into a $3 million commitment to childhood cancer research, giving South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor a new way to engage American communities while supporting a cause that extends far beyond the automobile industry.

The money will go to Hyundai Hope on Wheels, a U.S. nonprofit supported by the automaker that funds pediatric cancer research and the development of new treatments. The donation comes as Hyundai expands its charitable activities beyond financial contributions, encouraging people to participate directly in efforts to help children battling cancer.

Rather than relying on a conventional advertising campaign, Hyundai partnered with fitness tracking platform Strava to turn everyday exercise into a collective fundraising effort. The initiative offered participants a way to contribute without purchasing a vehicle or making a financial donation, while Hyundai increased its commitment as participation grew.

The effort produced a record that exceeded the company’s expectations. Participants collectively traveled nearly 20 million miles during September, more than doubling the previous distance record for a Strava challenge, according to Hyundai Motor America, the automaker’s U.S. subsidiary.

The Miles for the Warriors Challenge began September 2 as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Hyundai initially set a goal of 400,000 miles, reflecting the approximately 400,000 children diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year.

The company pledged $1 million to Hyundai Hope on Wheels if participants reached that target.

They accomplished it within 24 hours.

Hyundai responded by doubling its target to 800,000 miles and raising its donation pledge to $2 million. Participants surpassed the revised goal within another 2 days, and the campaign continued gathering momentum throughout the month.

By the time the challenge ended, participants had completed approximately 2.69 million activities and accumulated more than 2.19 million hours of exercise. Running accounted for nearly half of the recorded activities, followed by walking, cycling and swimming.

The record prompted Hyundai to contribute an additional $1 million, bringing the total donation to $3 million.

The campaign also demonstrated how a charitable initiative could generate public participation on a scale extending beyond a company’s existing customer base. Athletes, influencers and Hyundai brand ambassadors helped spread the challenge through social media, reaching approximately 2.6 million people across Strava and other platforms.

That reach gave Hyundai an opportunity to connect its brand with a cause involving children and families rather than focusing exclusively on its vehicles. The campaign brought together people through activities they already enjoyed, while directing the company’s financial contribution toward medical research.

Sean Gilpin, chief marketing officer of Hyundai Motor America, expressed appreciation for the participants and described the nearly 20 million miles as a powerful show of support for children undergoing cancer treatment and their families.

The fitness initiative is part of The Mark of a Warrior, a broader childhood cancer awareness campaign Hyundai introduced in September with actress Scarlett Johansson.
The campaign reimagines the handprint symbol associated with Hyundai Hope on Wheels as a mark representing the courage and determination of children fighting cancer.

Hyundai has extended the initiative into hospitals and local communities. The automaker is providing more than 6,000 specially designed Warrior Gowns to pediatric cancer patients, organizing Warrior Rally events connected to sporting activities and supporting community blood drives.

These efforts allow Hyundai to maintain its involvement beyond a single fundraising event while providing tangible support to children undergoing treatment.
Although the Strava challenge has ended, the company plans to continue its fundraising campaign through December 31.

Hyundai will donate $36 to Hyundai Hope on Wheels for each qualifying participant who engages with its official social media posts using the #HyundaiWarriors hashtag. The additional contributions are capped at $500,000.

The Strava challenge has already secured $3 million for pediatric cancer research, transforming thousands of individual workouts into a collective effort to support children facing serious illness. It also illustrates how Hyundai is extending its engagement with American communities through charitable initiatives that encourage participation beyond the traditional relationship between an automaker and its customers.
