South Korea’s agricultural and seafood exports surpassed $10 billion as of September 29, marking the fastest achievement of the milestone in history, according to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT). This year’s exports reached the $10 billion mark 18 days earlier than last year, when it was first reached on October 17.
The United States remained South Korea’s largest export market, with shipments totaling $1.724 billion, a 15.3% increase from the same period last year. Europe followed with $772 million, up 15.8%, while other promising markets such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (+9.6% at $296 million) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (+5.6% at $461 million) also showed strong demand for K-food products.
Among key products, ramen exports surged 24.7% to $1.116 billion, driven by growing popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Kimchi exports rose 3.2% to $125 million, while seaweed exports jumped 14.1% to $877 million. Grape shipments also posted a significant 45.2% increase to $35 million. The global spread of Korean cuisine contributed to sauce product exports rising 9.2% to $315 million.
To maintain momentum, the South Korean government and aT implemented strategies including addressing exporters’ challenges, developing market-specific key products, and linking promotions to Hallyu, or the Korean Wave. Measures were also taken to minimize potential disruptions from U.S. tariffs, including emergency operational and facility funding, international shipping cost support, and reduced insurance co-payment rates for currency fluctuations.
Looking ahead, aT plans to leverage its overseas network to identify high-potential products tailored to local demand and expand consumer access abroad through the end of the year.
aT President Hong Moon-pyo emphasized the growing global recognition of K-food. “Overseas consumers are increasingly seeking out Korean agricultural and seafood products on their own. Through tailored strategies for each product and market, we will do our utmost to surpass last year’s record $12.9 billion in exports and set a new record,” he said.
