HMD Global is preparing to release its final batch of Nokia-branded feature phones as it ends its licensing partnership with Nokia and accelerates its transition to an independent brand.
According to HMD-focused tipster “HMD_MEME’S” (@smashx_60) on April 20, HMD Global will launch five retro-inspired feature phones before its licensing deal with Nokia officially concludes. The lineup includes the Nokia 3510 4G, Nokia 5710XA 4G, Nokia 130 Music, Nokia 150 Music, and Nokia 8310 4G.
Among the five models, the Nokia 130 Music and Nokia 150 Music were released globally earlier this year, with the Indian versions branded under HMD rather than Nokia. The remaining three models are expected to launch later this year, though specific release details have not yet been disclosed.
The separation between HMD Global and Nokia began in earnest this January when HMD discontinued the Nokia XR21, effectively wrapping up its Nokia-branded smartphone portfolio.
The decision not to renew the licensing agreement stems from the contract’s scheduled expiration in March next year. HMD Global has opted to move forward without Nokia branding, aiming to build its own identity in the competitive global mobile market. Founded by former Nokia mobile division staff, HMD Global acquired the exclusive rights to produce Nokia-branded phones in 2016 under a 10-year license.
Now embarking on its independent path, HMD Global is already rolling out smartphones under its own name and is gradually increasing the share of HMD-branded products in its feature phone lineup as well.
An industry source noted, “This breakup doesn’t mean the end of Nokia phones altogether. Another company could still acquire the Nokia license and revive the brand with new products.”
