South Korean actor Ji Soo is rebuilding his career in the Philippines, years after allegations of school violence abruptly pushed him out of one of Asia’s most influential entertainment industries.
The comeback carries a significance that can be easy to miss outside South Korea.
Accusations involving violence or serious bullying during a celebrity’s school years can trigger an unusually severe backlash in the country, where public image plays a central role in television casting and advertising. Such controversies have repeatedly led broadcasters, production companies and brands to distance themselves from entertainers even when the alleged conduct occurred years before their careers began.
That helps explain why Ji Soo’s latest photographs from a Philippine production set represent more than a routine overseas acting job. His career shows how a performer whose commercial value collapsed in South Korea can attempt to rebuild it elsewhere in Asia, where the global popularity of Korean television has created audiences already familiar with Korean actors. The shift also illustrates how the expansion of Korean entertainment is making talent increasingly portable across national markets.
Ji Soo posted photographs on social media on Sept. 14 showing himself filming in the Philippines and spending time with cast members. In several images, he appeared with a long simulated wound across his face and the intense expression of an action character.
He wrote that he had been spending his days as Dong Hyun on set and with his family after filming, calling them beautiful September days.
Some overseas fans responded by praising his acting and encouraging him to continue working. Others said they hoped he would eventually return to Korean television.
Ji Soo first gained wider recognition in South Korea after appearing in Angry Mom, a 2015 drama aired by MBC, one of the country’s major television networks. He went on to appear in Sassy Go Go, Strong Girl Bong-soon and Bad Guys: Vile City, building a career as a familiar face in Korean television.
His ascent ended abruptly in 2021 when allegations concerning his behavior during his school years spread online. The controversy quickly grew into a professional crisis. Ji Soo left River Where the Moon Rises, a historical drama that was already in production, and later ended his relationship with KeyEast, a South Korean talent management company.
The fallout extended beyond Ji Soo himself. The production company behind River Where the Moon Rises pursued damages from KeyEast over losses connected to his departure, illustrating how a celebrity scandal in South Korea can quickly become a financial problem for broadcasters, production companies and advertisers.
Ji Soo later said in 2023 that he had resolved misunderstandings with the middle school classmate who first raised the allegations. More recently, KeyEast withdrew its appeal in the dispute with the drama’s production company and agreed to pay compensation, bringing the remaining legal fight related to his departure from the series to a close.
By then, however, Ji Soo had already spent several years outside mainstream Korean entertainment. Rather than waiting for an immediate return at home, he began working in the Philippines in 2024.
He is now affiliated with GMA Network, one of the Philippines’ largest television broadcasters, and has appeared in local productions including Taskforce Firewall. His recent work has increasingly positioned him in action oriented roles, giving him a new screen identity outside the Korean television market that first made him famous.
Whether that second act eventually leads back to South Korea remains uncertain. What is already clear is that the same cross border popularity that helped turn Korean dramas into a global business is also giving individual actors more places to rebuild careers when their opportunities at home disappear.
