More than 512,000 vehicles are being recalled in South Korea after regulators identified software and manufacturing defects that could increase the risk of crashes, fires and other safety hazards, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Aug. 6.
Hyundai Motor and Kia, including Genesis models, account for nearly the entire recall, with 509,258 vehicles across 11 models affected.
The recall covers 51,017 Hyundai Tucson SUVs and 53,764 Tucson Hybrid SUVs because of a software flaw in the forward collision-avoidance assist system that could cause the safety feature to malfunction.
Another 141,825 Grandeur Hybrid sedans and 26,356 Avante Hybrid sedans are being recalled after regulators found defects in hybrid control software that could increase the risk of vehicle fires.
Several Genesis models—including 37,134 G80 sedans, 44,787 G90 sedans, 3,930 GV70 SUVs and 31,962 GV80 SUVs—along with 9,246 Hyundai Grandeur sedans, are being recalled because improperly secured engine components could cause fuel leaks, creating a potential fire hazard. Kia is also recalling 99,889 Carnival minivans and 9,348 K8 sedans for the same defect.
Separately, 711 Jeep Cherokee SUVs imported by Stellantis Korea are being recalled because of transmission assembly defects that could lead to a loss of power while driving or unintended vehicle movement while parked.
Honda Korea is recalling 2,424 Odyssey minivans after cracks in the rearview camera housing were found to allow moisture into the camera assembly, potentially corroding the circuit board and causing the rearview display to fail.
Owners can determine whether their vehicles are included in the recall by checking South Korea’s Automotive Recall Center using their vehicle identification number or registration number.
