McDonald’s is betting that G Dragon can help turn a new Korean flavor into a regional marketing campaign, putting the K pop star at the center of a rollout that will reach 13 Asian markets beginning Sept. 17.

McDonald’s Korea, the South Korean operation of the American fast food company, developed a gochujang butter sauce that will serve as the common theme of the campaign. The company has not yet launched the new menu in South Korea. It plans to introduce the McCrispy Gochujang Butter and McSpicy Gochujang Butter there on Sept.

17 before the broader campaign expands sequentially across participating Asian markets.

The strategy helps explain why McDonald’s chose G Dragon rather than treating the launch as another limited menu promotion. Gochujang gives the company a distinctly Korean product, while G Dragon gives it a cultural figure whose presence extends beyond music into fashion and art. McDonald’s is effectively using the two together to market a Korean identity that it believes can travel across different Asian consumer markets. The decision is notable for an American company because the campaign was conceived by its Korean operation rather than handed down from its global headquarters.

G Dragon is best known as a member of BIGBANG and has built a broader profile through fashion and other creative projects. McDonald’s is extending that connection beyond advertising by preparing limited edition merchandise with PEACEMINUSONE, his fashion label, later this month. Details of the merchandise have not yet been disclosed.

The food itself remains at the center of the rollout. Gochujang is a fermented red pepper paste widely used in Korean cooking. McDonald’s Korea combined it with butter for a sauce that will be used as a common motif across the 13 markets, although individual markets will develop menus suited to local tastes. Some will retain the word gochujang directly in their product names rather than replacing it with a more generic description.

In South Korea, the two chicken sandwiches arriving Sept. 17 will combine different chicken patties with the gochujang butter sauce and Colby Jack cheese. The sauce will also be sold separately as a dipping option.

What makes the campaign more than a Korean menu launch is the direction of the expansion. McDonald’s Korea developed the sauce and is leading the campaign, while other Asian markets are adapting that Korean concept for their own customers. The American restaurant chain is therefore using South Korea not simply as another market for global products, but as a source of a regional product and marketing idea.

G Dragon provides the campaign with the celebrity reach McDonald’s wants around that idea. The gochujang butter sauce provides the product. Together, they give McDonald’s a way to turn a South Korean menu launch into a much larger Asian marketing push.
