Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its first restaurant in South Korea on September 2, bringing the U.S. fast-casual chain to Asia for the first time as it looks to tap growing demand for customizable and healthier dining options.

The new restaurant in Seoul’s Gangnam district is Chipotle’s first location in Asia and its first in South Korea. The chain is known for allowing customers to build their own meals by choosing from a range of ingredients.

At a preview event on September 1, fresh ingredients and sauces prepared by restaurant employees were stocked at the serving counter from early in the morning. The restaurant’s open kitchen gives customers a clear view of meat being grilled and prepared.

The 96-seat restaurant offers burrito bowls, burritos, tacos and salads. Customers can then customize their meals with brown or white rice, chicken, pork or tofu, black or pinto beans, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and tortilla chips.

The ordering process takes place along a serving line, where customers select each ingredient in sequence. The highly customizable format has also spawned numerous “best Chipotle combinations” shared on social media.

Chipotle, which operates its restaurants directly rather than relying on traditional franchising, is emphasizing ingredient quality and authentic preparation as it enters the Korean market.

“Our goal is to use fresh, high-quality ingredients from Korea, prepare them using authentic cooking methods and offer them at a reasonable price,” Chipotle Chief Executive Scott Boatwright said at a press briefing. “South Korea, with its dynamic consumers, is the ideal market for our first entry into Asia.”

Chipotle’s expansion into Asia is being led by Sangmidang Holdings. Big Bite Company, an affiliate of Sangmidang Holdings, and Chipotle have established a joint venture, S&C Restaurant Holdings, to operate the business.

Hee-soo Hur, president of Sangmidang Holdings, said the company aims to establish a culture of customization and make dining experiences tailored to individual consumers part of everyday life in South Korea.

Founded in the U.S. in 1993, Chipotle had about 4,200 restaurants worldwide as of the end of June. The company has built its brand around its “Food with Integrity” philosophy and has steadily expanded as consumers have shown greater interest in food positioned as fresh, customizable and prepared to order.

Despite the brand’s global expansion, Chipotle had no restaurants in Asia before its South Korean debut. The company has seen sustained interest in the region as consumers increasingly seek fast meals that are viewed as healthier alternatives to conventional fast food.

Sangmidang Holdings, which secured the rights to develop Chipotle restaurants in South Korea and Singapore, plans to open the chain’s second and third South Korean locations by the end of 2026. Its first Singapore location is planned for the first half of 2027.

The partnership also builds on Sangmidang Holdings’ experience bringing U.S. restaurant brands to South Korea. In 2016, the company introduced Shake Shack to the Korean market for the first time. The burger chain has since expanded to 37 locations in South Korea.

Chipotle’s entry into South Korea comes as international restaurant brands seek new growth opportunities in Asia and Korean consumers become increasingly familiar with fast-casual dining and highly customizable menus.
