Hyundai Motor Company, a leading South Korean automaker, sold nearly 1,000 electric vehicles in Indonesia during the first half of the year, making a modest but notable showing in a market overwhelmingly dominated by Chinese brands.

Several media outlets reported on July 29 that Hyundai ranked seventh in Indonesia’s EV market with approximately 1,000 units sold from January to June, capturing a 2.8% market share, according to data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO).

China ‘s BYD led the market with 13,995 units sold and a 39% share. Other top players included Wuling (5,170 units, 14.5%) and Chery (4,611 units, 12.9%). Guangzhou Automobile’s Aion brand came in fourth with 1,940 units (5.4%), followed by Geely with 1,259 units (3.5%).

Although Chinese manufacturers dominated over 90% of the Indonesian battery electric vehicle (BEV) market during the period, Hyundai’s performance was seen as encouraging, particularly given its plans for localized production and expanded product offerings.

Hyundai aims to grow its footprint in Indonesia by producing more vehicles locally and launching five additional EV models by the end of the year. The upcoming lineup includes the all-new Kona Electric, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 5 N, Ioniq 6, and the Kona Electric N Line. The company previously announced a 2024 production target of over 80,000 units-including both EVs and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles-at its plant in Deltamas, Indonesia.

Indonesia ‘s EV market is expected to grow rapidly over the long term, supported by aggressive government electrification policies. These include EV subsidies and local content requirements under the TKDN (Domestic Component Level) policy. As a result, the nation’s EV sales in the first half of 2024 surged 267% year-over-year.

“Considering the pricing and supply chain advantages held by Chinese brands, Hyundai’s performance is promising,” said an industry official. “Its expanding local production and growing reputation for quality are starting to gain recognition.”
