The growing international reach of competitive gaming is creating new opportunities for U.S. media, technology and entertainment companies, as South Korea’s esports ecosystem continues to produce teams and players capable of drawing global audiences. Gen.G’s latest domestic title adds to the momentum heading into one of the industry’s biggest international events.
Gen.G defeated Hanwha Life Esports 3-1 in the 2026 League of Legends Champions Korea final on September 13 at Seoul’s KSPO Dome, overcoming an early deficit by winning the final three games. The victory secured Gen.G’s second consecutive LCK championship and its seventh overall.
The title also sends Gen.G into next month’s League of Legends World Championship, known as Worlds, as Korea’s No. 1 seed. The tournament will be held in the U.S., putting one of the world’s strongest esports markets at the center of the competition.
For global esports operators, publishers and media companies, the LCK remains an important test of the commercial potential of competitive gaming. South Korea has developed a mature esports infrastructure, while its teams and players have become internationally recognizable entertainment properties.
Gen.G Coach Yoo Sang-wook said the team’s difficult moments throughout the season had ultimately made it stronger.
“I wasn’t satisfied with our draft in the first game, but I’m happy that we won 3-1,” Mr. Yoo said after the final. “I think the experiences we went through this season made the team stronger.”
He added that those experiences could help Gen.G at Worlds, where the team will seek to add a global championship to its domestic success.
Gen.G captain Park Jae-hyuk, known as Ruler, was named Finals MVP. The veteran ADC said the victory was especially meaningful because the team had proved it could succeed through adversity.
“It feels even better because we confirmed that we can play well and win through the process,” Ruler said.
Ruler said he had struggled early in the season and at one point worried that his professional career could be nearing its end.
“Deep down, I had a lot of worries that my career as a professional player might be over,” he said. “But I didn’t give up and tried to work harder than everyone else.”
His performance eventually recovered, leading to both the LCK championship and the Finals MVP award.
“Everyone goes through periods when they aren’t playing well,” Ruler said. “But I want to tell people that there will also be a day when they see the light.”
The road to Worlds could include a matchup with Bilibili Gaming, one of China’s leading League of Legends teams. Ruler said he is confident about facing Bilibili Gaming’s ADC Park Do-hyeon, known as Viper, whom he has played against many times.
“I’ve played against Viper many times, so I know what kind of player he is,” Ruler said. “If we meet at Worlds, I think we can perform well by playing as we normally do—and I think we can play even better.”
Gen.G top laner Kim Ki-in, known as Kiin, also delivered a steady performance against Hanwha Life Esports’ Choi Woo-je, known as Zeus.
“I’ve played against Zeus so many times that I wasn’t really thinking about the pressure,” Kiin said. “I just wanted us to have a fun and exciting series.”
Jungler Kim Geon-bu, known as Canyon, faces another international test this year. He is also scheduled to represent South Korea in esports at the 2026 Asian Games.
“With the Asian Games coming up soon, I’m especially happy that we were able to win this championship,” Canyon said. He added that he was confident in his ability to manage his condition ahead of the competition.
Gen.G will enter Worlds as the LCK’s top seed when the tournament opens in the U.S. next month. For the team, the next goal is a world title; for the broader esports industry, the tournament offers another opportunity to turn South Korea’s competitive gaming dominance into a larger global commercial audience.
