When Netflix’s series Teach You a Lesson reached No. 1 globally, its lead actor Kim Moo-yul said the first person he wanted to tell was not an executive, agent or co-star. It was his wife, actress Yoon Seung-ah, who had stayed with him through the years when others saw him as a poor actor with an uncertain future.
Kim said he received the news by phone from the director, but ended the call because Yoon was outside and he wanted to tell her face to face. When he met her in an underground parking garage and told her the series had reached No. 1 globally, he said he could barely speak. The two held each other and cried.
The moment was not simply a celebration of a streaming hit. For Kim, it was the release of years of failure, financial hardship and quiet endurance that he said became bearable because of his wife.
Kim said he had faced countless setbacks as an actor and had little to offer during the early years of their relationship. But he said Yoon made those years feel happy enough that he did not fully recognize how difficult they were.
Yoon said many people opposed the relationship at the beginning and questioned why she would date a man with little money. She said she stayed because she saw something different when Kim was acting. To her, he looked most alive on stage, and his passion helped both of them endure the years before his wider recognition.
Kim credited Yoon for allowing him to keep going when his career was uncertain. Yoon said the global No. 1 moment felt different because she had watched his long path as an actor from up close. When he cried in front of her, she said she told him only one thing. He had worked hard.
For international viewers, Kim may be another Korean actor emerging through the global spread of Korean dramas. But the story he chose to tell was not about fame arriving overnight. It was about the person who believed in him before the world did.
Kim’s success may have been measured by a global ranking. To him, it appeared to mean something more personal. It was proof that the years he and Yoon had carried together had finally reached a moment they could share.
