South Korea’s Doosan Robotics, a leading maker of collaborative robots (cobots), has opened a new training center at the University of Maine to strengthen robotics education and workforce development in North America.

According to the company, the center opened August 20 at the university’s Orono campus, within the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC). It marks Doosan’s first training partnership with a U.S. university and its second Authorized Training Center (ATC) in the country, following one in Plano, Texas.

The new facility will serve as a hands-on learning hub, offering practical courses in robot programming, systems integration, and real-world industrial applications. Training is open to students, local workers, and community members. Doosan is supplying robots, teaching kits, and curriculum materials.

Doosan is also working with Industrial Automation Supply (IAS), a Maine-based distributor, to bridge the gap between education and local manufacturers by deploying automation solutions across the region.

“Creating a strong talent pipeline is just as critical as the technology itself,” said Hyunsoo Kim, executive vice president at Doosan Robotics. “We’re committed to expanding training programs across North America to support the future of smart manufacturing.”

John Belding, director of AMC at the University of Maine, said the partnership will give students hands-on experience with next-gen robotics and help meet rising industry demand for skilled labor.

Doosan now operates six training centers globally, including four in South Korea and two in the U.S. The company also partnered with distributor iAutomation in 2023 to expand its East Coast sales network and continues to target growth across the Americas through its Texas-based subsidiary.
