Maggie Kang, the Korean Canadian director of Netflix’s record-breaking animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters, will visit Korea next month to discuss the creative and strategic choices that turned her debut feature into a global success.
Several media outlets reported that Kang will speak at the Global Media Conference, hosted at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on September 18. The event, organized by JoongAng Ilbo to mark its 60th anniversary, will feature her keynote on the making of K-Pop Demon Hunters, its unique blend of Korean shamanism and K-pop culture, and her vision for content innovation and growth.
Born in Seoul and raised in Toronto, Kang studied animation at Sheridan College in Canada before working as a story artist at DreamWorks, Blue Sky Studios, Warner Bros., and Illumination. K-Pop Demon Hunters, co-directed with American filmmaker Chris Appelhans, is her first feature film.
Released on Netflix in June, the film became the platform’s top-grossing animated title of all time. Its original soundtrack also achieved crossover chart success, with the track “Golden” reaching No. 1 on both the UK Official Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100.
