The music industry has long struggled with one challenge: keeping artists commercially relevant after their peak years. South Korean boy band BIGBANG’s return after a four-year hiatus shows how K-pop has developed a different approach, building dedicated global audiences that can sustain an artist’s value over decades.

BIGBANG, one of the early K-pop groups that helped expand Korean music beyond Asia before the worldwide rise of BTS and BLACKPINK, released its new digital single “BiiiG” on Aug. 19. The release marked the group’s 20th anniversary activities and its first new music since 2022.

The comeback quickly demonstrated the strength of the group’s remaining fan base. “BiiiG” reached No. 1 on Melon’s Top 100 chart, South Korea’s largest music streaming platform, only one hour after release. The song also remained at the top of Melon’s Hot 100 chart the following morning.

The response highlights a broader change in the global entertainment market. Music companies are increasingly looking beyond individual songs and focusing on artists that can generate long-term value through multiple businesses, including streaming, live performances, merchandise and brand partnerships. K-pop has become a major example of this strategy by creating strong fan communities that remain engaged even during periods without new releases.

BIGBANG’s importance comes from its role in shaping that system. The group debuted in 2006 and became known for its distinctive sound, strong individual identities and member involvement in music production. Before K-pop became a regular presence on global charts and stadium stages, BIGBANG helped establish the artist-driven model that later supported the international expansion of Korean music.

The group’s new single “BiiiG” was written and composed by G-Dragon, combining his signature rap style with Taeyang’s groove-focused vocals and Daesung’s powerful voice. The members also participated in visual direction and marketing planning, maintaining creative control over the project after a long break.

BIGBANG will begin its 20th-anniversary world tour, “BIGBANG 2026-2027 WORLD TOUR < XX : COSMOS >,” with three concerts in Goyang, South Korea, from Aug. 21 to Aug. 23. The tour will continue across North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia, with 33 performances scheduled across 19 cities.

The group’s return demonstrates why K-pop has become a case study for the global entertainment industry. BIGBANG’s ability to regain attention after years away shows that successful artist brands can maintain commercial power through loyal audiences, international touring networks and expanded content opportunities long after their initial rise.
