South Korea’s girl group NewJeans may face a prolonged hiatus — potentially remaining inactive until 2027 — as legal disputes with their label intensify and former creative director Min Hee‑jin confronts significant financial pressure.

A Seoul court recently upheld the exclusive contract between NewJeans and their label ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE Corporation, extending the agreement through July 31, 2029. Legal analysts note that if appeals proceed — potentially reaching the Supreme Court — the group could be barred from meaningful activity through 2026, effectively missing the so-called “golden window” for K‑pop idol groups.

At the same time, Min Hee‑jin is involved in a separate lawsuit concerning a put-option claim reportedly worth approximately $18 million. NewJeans is also facing multi-million-dollar legal costs arising from the dispute. Legal experts warn that an unfavorable outcome could leave both Min Hee‑jin and the group burdened with significant financial liabilities.

The combined effect has stalled NewJeans’ momentum, leaving planned releases and global tours uncertain. Industry observers say that resolving contract disputes and ensuring fair compensation and manageable workload arrangements are critical for the group to resume activities and maintain their success.
