Known for his love of soccer, Bong shared a memorable experience from the 1990 Italy World Cup. He revealed, “I listened to the World Cup while in jail.” He explained that he had been jailed for violating laws related to protests but emphasized, “It wasn’t a serious sentence.”
Bong recounted, “I spent about three weeks in Yeongdeungpo Prison due to the Assembly and Demonstration Act.” He added that he was later released on bail and received a suspended sentence. With a touch of humor, he noted, “I happened to be in jail during the World Cup, which only comes around every four years.”
During his time behind bars, the prison warden, who was a soccer fan, played live broadcasts of the World Cup matches over the speakers. Bong recalled hearing the news of South Korea’s 0-2 loss to Belgium during that period.
