His new film expands that style into a larger spectacle built around action, mystery and science fiction, while bringing together some of Korea’s most recognizable actors with Hollywood names Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender.

The story begins near the Demilitarized Zone separating South Korea and North Korea, where Beom-seok, a local outpost chief played by Hwang Jung-min, discovers the torn remains of a cow in a rice field. What first appears to be an animal attack soon becomes something far stranger, as an unknown entity descends on an isolated village and pushes the film from grounded suspense into full-scale survival thriller territory.

For Korea’s film business, Hope is more than another summer release. It represents a push back toward the kind of big-screen experience that became harder to sustain as streaming platforms reshaped viewing habits and local theaters struggled to recover their pre-pandemic momentum. Rather than building its appeal around a franchise or a familiar intellectual property, the film relies on Na’s name, a large ensemble cast and the promise of a theatrical experience that depends on scale, sound and momentum.

That approach is central to the film itself. Hope uses action as its main language. Characters do not spend much time explaining the threat. They run, collide, fight and survive. The film builds tension gradually before shifting into a relentless series of chases, confrontations and escalating set pieces that make its long running time feel less like a burden than part of the design.

The cast gives the film much of its physical force. Hwang Jung-min, one of South Korea’s most established screen actors, plays Beom-seok not as a superhero but as an ordinary man forced to confront something beyond his understanding. Jung Ho-yeon, known globally for Netflix’s Squid Game, brings speed and precision to the film’s action scenes. Jo In-sung adds scale through horseback pursuits and gunfight sequences that underline the film’s ambition as a large-format spectacle.

The film also carries international ambitions. Vikander and Fassbender provide voice performances for the alien presence at the center of the story, helping turn what could have been a visual effect into a character with emotional weight. Na also makes the unusual choice not to hide the creature in darkness. By placing it in broad daylight, he makes the unfamiliar harder to dismiss and gives the film a visual identity distinct from many Hollywood science fiction thrillers.

Hope arrives at a moment when Korean entertainment remains globally visible through K-pop, streaming dramas and prestige films, but the country’s theatrical film industry has faced a more complicated recovery. The question is no longer whether Korean stories can travel. It is whether Korean filmmakers can still create original movies large enough to draw audiences back into theaters at home while also attracting attention abroad.

Na’s answer is a film built less on explanation than impact. Hope is designed to be heard, seen and felt in a cinema. If it succeeds, it could give Korea’s film industry something it has been looking for in the streaming era: proof that an original, director-driven Korean movie can still become an event.

South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin is returning to theaters after a decade with Hope, a 156-minute genre
