South Korea\u2019s Central Group is facing growing scrutiny over its content strategy as court-led restructuring across its media and entertainment affiliates raises questions about future financing and marketing support for major productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pressure intensified after broadcaster JTBC failed to repay about $206 million in securitized debt on June 12, triggering a liquidity squeeze across the group. Within days, parent company Central Group and key affiliates\u2014including Contentree JoongAng, Central P&I, and cinema operator Megabox JoongAng\u2014filed for court rehabilitation. JTBC followed with its own filing on June 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry participants say recent programming adjustments, including the suspension of variety shows and pauses in drama production in favor of sports re-runs, may reflect broader cost pressures tied to the restructuring process. The group has not publicly linked the programming changes directly to its financial situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention has now shifted to Central Group\u2019s core content pipeline, particularly high-budget projects already in advanced stages of production.
Among them is \u201cHope,\u201d a major film backed by Plus M Entertainment, the film investment and distribution arm under Megabox JoongAng. The project carries a production budget of roughly $370 million and is scheduled for theatrical release on July 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also under close watch is the upcoming season of Netflix\u2019s breakout food competition series \u201cBlack & White Chef,\u201d produced by Studio Slam, a subsidiary of SLL JoongAng. The original season became a global hit on Netflix, raising expectations for continued international momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, industry executives say near-complete productions are unlikely to face immediate disruption, given Korea\u2019s multi-party financing model that spreads risk across studios, platforms and investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bigger concern is forward-looking capital. In Korea\u2019s content industry, marketing spend and promotional scale often determine commercial success, and prolonged financial restructuring could weaken investor confidence and slow new project approvals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Executives also point to potential cuts or delays in promotional activities, including premieres, nationwide tours and press events, as a key variable in determining box office performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, most existing projects appear intact. But as restructuring proceeds, the central question for producers and investors is shifting from whether current content will survive to whether the financing system that supports future production remains stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
