South Korean food brands Nongshim and Ottogi are enjoying a surge in global recognition thanks to the unexpected success of Netflix\u2019s animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters \u2014 all without spending a dime on advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Released on June 20, the film follows a trio of K-pop idols who moonlight as demon slayers. Since its debut, K-Pop Demon Hunters has topped Netflix\u2019s movie charts in more than 40 countries, including the United States, Canada, Germany, and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set in a stylized version of Seoul, the film features a wide range of Korean street foods \u2014 including kimbap, hotteok, sundae, and various snacks and ramen \u2014 many of which have caught the attention of global viewers and Korean food enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most talked-about items is a red cup of ramen labeled \u201cShin (\u795e) Ramyun\u201d from a fictional brand called \u201cDongshim.\u201d Although the name and branding differ slightly from Nongshim\u2019s iconic Shin Ramyun \u2014 using the Chinese character for \u201cspirit\u201d (\u795e) instead of \u201cspicy\u201d (\u8f9b), and \u201cDongshim\u201d instead of \u201cNongshim\u201d \u2014 the color scheme, packaging design, and bold typography make the resemblance unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another snack in the film, labeled \u201cSpicy Potato Chips,\u201d closely resembles Nongshim\u2019s popular Saewookkang (shrimp crackers), both in appearance and texture, according to viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, the fictional ramen also contains design elements reminiscent of Nongshim\u2019s rival, Ottogi. The yellow cup design and the availability of both spicy and mild flavors are similar to Ottogi\u2019s Jin Ramen. Fans have also pointed out that a symbol on the cup\u2019s lid bears a strong resemblance to Ottogi\u2019s logo \u2014 a child licking their lips inside a double-arched circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, both Nongshim and Ottogi appear to be benefitting from what many consider unintentional product placement. While there are no official partnerships or promotional agreements, the visual similarities have generated online buzz and sparked speculation about potential collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a clear example of how K-content is expanding the global reach of K-food,\u201d said a food industry official. \u201cEven without planned marketing, the exposure is significant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither Nongshim nor Ottogi has announced any plans to leverage the attention \u2014 at least not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re aware of the current buzz,\u201d a Nongshim spokesperson said. \u201cBut any further steps would require discussions with Netflix, and nothing has been decided yet.\u201d An Ottogi representative similarly stated that no internal discussions have taken place so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
