South Korea\u2019s manufacturing confidence climbed to its highest level in more than four years in July, as strong demand from the semiconductor, shipbuilding and defense industries lifted factory activity, the Bank of Korea said on July 30, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The central bank said its Composite Business Sentiment Index (CBSI) for all industries rose 0.8 point from a month earlier to 98.5, rebounding after a 1.2-point decline in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The index, which combines key manufacturing and non-manufacturing business surveys, is benchmarked to a long-term average of 100. Readings above that level indicate optimism, while those below 100 reflect pessimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manufacturing sentiment increased 2.0 points to 103.2, marking a fourth consecutive monthly gain and the highest reading since June 2022. The index has remained above the 100 threshold for three straight months after returning to expansion territory in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The improvement was driven by stronger new orders and business conditions in machinery, precision instruments and metal-processing industries. Companies reported rising demand for equipment tied to semiconductor production, overseas data-center construction, shipbuilding and defense projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confidence improved across companies of all sizes. The index for large corporations rose 0.8 point to 105.3, the strongest reading since May 2022, while the measure for small and medium-sized enterprises increased 1.9 points to 97.6, the highest since July 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exporters’ sentiment climbed 1.1 points to 107.5, while domestic-oriented companies posted a larger 2.0-point increase to 100.0, suggesting that improving conditions are spreading beyond South Korea’s largest export manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bank of Korea officials said stronger activity in shipbuilding, defense and semiconductors has boosted demand for suppliers producing metal products, machinery and precision equipment, helping smaller manufacturers benefit from the recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The services sector remained comparatively soft. The non-manufacturing CBSI edged down 0.2 point to 95.2, extending its decline for a second straight month. Higher sales were offset by weaker financing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transportation, warehousing, wholesale and retail businesses faced pressure from lower maritime cargo volumes and higher freight and logistics costs. The central bank said reduced shipments of petrochemical products and higher transportation costs linked to tensions in the Middle East continued to weigh on service-sector activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business expectations also improved. The all-industry CBSI outlook for August rose 1.3 points to 96.5. Manufacturing expectations climbed 2.3 points to 100.5, the highest level since September 2022, while the non-manufacturing outlook increased 0.5 point to 93.7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Economic Sentiment Index, which combines business and consumer confidence, rose 1.1 points to 97.9 in July. Its seasonally adjusted cyclical component edged up 0.2 point to 95.9, reaching its highest level since October 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While both business and consumer sentiment remain below their historical average, the Bank of Korea said confidence has continued to recover gradually as the country’s export-driven industries maintain solid momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
