South Korea’s low-cost carrier Eastar Airlines is planning to acquire its first Boeing 787 wide-body aircraft, marking a major expansion in the airline’s fleet and long-haul ambitions.

According to industry sources, Eastar is targeting 2027 for the introduction of the “Dreamliner,” which could enable flights to long-haul destinations including the U.S., Europe, and Oceania. The airline reportedly formed an internal task force (TF) in September to explore the feasibility of acquiring large aircraft, and engaged Boeing earlier this month to check supply availability and assess profitability.

Currently, Eastar operates a fleet of 20 narrow-body aircraft, consisting of 10 Boeing 737-800s and 10 Boeing 737-8s, serving short- and medium-haul routes. Introducing a wide-body aircraft would be a first in the airline’s 18-year history. If successful, Eastar could debut its first long-haul aircraft around its 20th anniversary.

The Boeing 787 is capable of flying over 10,000 kilometers, making it suitable for intercontinental flights. Eastar is reportedly considering launching its first long-haul services from demand-heavy cities such as Los Angeles and Sydney.

Industry analysts note that discussions about Eastar acquiring larger aircraft have circulated since the airline resumed operations in 2023, three years after ceasing flights due to financial difficulties and the COVID-19 pandemic. Until now, Eastar had not formally announced plans for wide-body aircraft.

The move is seen as a strategic step in the airline’s medium- to long-term growth plan. With a fleet of 20 aircraft, Eastar has reportedly achieved a level of scale needed to pursue expansion. Earlier this year, the airline completed a $52 million capital increase to strengthen its balance sheet, which may also support fleet expansion in the coming years.

An Eastar Airlines spokesperson said, “It is true that a task force has been formed and that we are reviewing supply availability with the manufacturer. We will make an official announcement once details regarding the acquisition and timing are finalized.”
