Nintendo ‘s next-generation handheld console, the Switch 2, is expected to surpass its predecessor in first-year sales. With a potential launch by late June, the console is already anticipated to be a commercial success.
At the Game Developers Conference 2025 (GDC 2025) on March 18, market research firm Omdia projected that the Nintendo Switch 2 will sell over 15 million units within this year.
However, an official release date has yet to be announced. The final global hands-on event is scheduled to conclude in Seoul on June 1, making a late June launch highly likely. If this timeline holds, the console could sell more than 3 million units per month, setting a record-breaking pace.
Omdia attributes the expected success to Nintendo’s strong first-party game lineup. The Switch 2 will launch alongside a long-awaited new installment of Mario Kart, marking the series’ first new title in eight years. Other major releases include a new 3D Mario game, Metroid Prime 4, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
The robust game lineup is expected to attract new players while also driving upgrades among existing Switch owners.
Nintendo is set to reveal more details about the Switch 2 during the Nintendo Direct event on April 2. According to leaks, the new console will feature a larger display and an improved controller. Additionally, dual USB-C ports on the top and bottom will support fast charging up to 20V.
