LG Display has been named a key partner for Sony Honda Mobility, supplying cutting-edge automotive display panels for the company’s debut electric vehicle (EV) sedan, the AFEELA 1. The announcement was made during CES 2025, the world’s largest consumer electronics and IT trade show, which kicked off on January 6.
Sony Honda Mobility, established in 2022 as a 50-50 joint venture between Sony and Honda, revealed its partner list at the event, which included global tech giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, TikTok, and Dolby. LG Display was the only South Korean company to be named among the partners.
Industry insiders speculate that LG Display has secured a supply contract for the dashboard display panels used in the AFEELA 1. At CES, the AFEELA 1 prototype showcased a striking, wide digital display panel integrated into its dashboard, underscoring LG Display’s contribution to the vehicle.
During the initial development stages of the AFEELA project, Sony Honda Mobility collaborated with Taiwanese display manufacturer AUO. However, the company has now diversified its supply chain, opting to work with multiple partners, including LG Display.
“Sony Honda Mobility appears to have selected partners like LG Display and AUO based on their technological capabilities and quality standards,” said a display industry expert.
LG Display’s entry into Sony Honda Mobility’s supply chain is particularly significant, as Japanese automakers are known for their stringent quality requirements. In 2023, LG Display revealed that it was working on automotive OLED projects with nine global automakers, cementing its position as a leader in the growing automotive display market.
According to the Korea Display Industry Association (KIDA), the automotive OLED panel market is projected to expand rapidly, with its share of the overall display market increasing from 2% in 2022 to 17.2% by 2027.
The AFEELA 1 sedan is a tech marvel, featuring 40 advanced sensors, including optical cameras, LiDAR, and ultrasonic sensors, paired with onboard computing power of up to 800 TOPS. These capabilities enable sophisticated driver-assistance systems. Additionally, the AFEELA 1 includes a Dolby Atmos-supported spatial sound system, transforming the vehicle into a mobile entertainment hub.
The sedan also boasts a 300-mile driving range, compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network, 21-inch wheels, camera-based mirrors, and rear infotainment systems. It will be available in two trims—Origin and Signature—priced at $89,900 and $102,900, respectively.
As the automotive industry increasingly embraces advanced display technologies, LG Display’s partnership with Sony Honda Mobility signals a new era for vehicle interiors, blending innovation with functionality.
