Data4, a subsidiary of Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P. (BEP), a Canadian renewable energy company, is considering the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in its European data centers. The company plans to use Westinghouse Electric Company’s AP300 SMR to reduce dependence on conventional power grids, alleviate public grid stress, and establish self-sufficient energy infrastructure for its data centers.

According to industry sources, Data4 has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Westinghouse to assess the use of the AP300 SMR for power supply in its future European data centers.

Under the agreement, Data4 will install an AP300 SMR at one of its European data centers. The AP300 SMR is based on Westinghouse’s AP1000 large pressurized water reactor and is expected to be operational in the early 2030s.

SMRs are smaller than traditional large reactors but are designed to reduce potential risks while providing a stable power supply. They are emerging as a next-generation energy solution to meet the growing demand for electricity. Their flexible power generation, ease of transportation, and simple installation make them well-suited for dedicated use in large industrial facilities like data centers. Installing an SMR close to a facility can minimize grid dependency and transmission losses.

Data4 ‘s data centers have traditionally relied exclusively on conventional power utilities. However, with the introduction of the Westinghouse AP300 SMR, the company will gain greater energy autonomy, reduce its reliance on public power grids, and ensure more resilient and independent energy operations.

Founded in 2006 by Colony Capital (now DigitalBridge) and acquired by Brookfield in April 2023, Data4 currently operates approximately 34 data centers across France, Italy, Spain, Poland, and Luxembourg. The company plans to invest “$21.8 billion” over the next five years to expand its data center operations in France.

Westinghouse is owned by Brookfield Renewable Partners. In November 2023, Brookfield Renewable Partners and Canadian uranium producer Cameco jointly acquired Westinghouse, with Brookfield holding a 51% stake and Cameco 49%.
