James Cameron’s latest cinematic behemoth, Avatar: Fire and Ash, debuted powerfully in South Korea on December 17, drawing over 260,000 viewers on its opening day and decisively claiming the top box office spot. The film advances the saga of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), navigating the aftermath of personal tragedy and a new threat from the Fire Nation led by Varang (Oona Chaplin). With nearly 600,000 advance tickets sold, the strong opening underscores the franchise’s enduring grip on audiences and its status as a global cinematic event.

However, this latest installment arrives in a radically different global market compared to its predecessors. Several years post-pandemic, it is clear that theatrical box office may not fully return to its former heights. The total U.S. box office for 2025 currently stands at $7.6 billion, a significant drop from the $11.3 billion recorded in 2019. Worldwide, industry projections for 2025 hover around $34.1 billion, marking a 13% decline from pre-pandemic levels.

Against this backdrop of industry contraction, all eyes are on Cameron’s visually spectacular epic to serve as the year-end box office cavalry. The immense pressure is on the Pandoran saga to not only deliver massive numbers but also to provide clues to the magic formula needed to break the dominance of at-home streaming and lure audiences back to cinemas in force.

In Korea, the film’s success momentarily pushed Disney’s Zootopia 2 to second place with 85,000 viewers, while the local film The Upstairs Neighbors held third. This demonstrates that even amid a challenging global climate, a franchise with unparalleled visual spectacle and narrative scale can still achieve blockbuster openings. The performance of Avatar: Fire and Ash in the coming weeks will be scrutinized worldwide as a key indicator of the blockbuster model’s vitality in the streaming era.
